MILBRIDGE and PALM COAST, Fla. – Mr. Hens Vanderschoot, 83, passed away Aug. 2, 2010, in Lakeland, Fla., due to multiple complications resulting from leukemia and related treatments. He was born Nov. 22, 1926, in the Netherlands. He served a tour in the Dutch Marines, being stationed in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, after which time he moved to Aruba, where he met his wife, Joke Hartog. They got married in Oranjestad, Aruba, in 1954, after which time they moved to Montreal. In 1957 they moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where he worked for Peninsular Insurance. Later on he moved to Nassau, Bahamas, where ultimately he became CEO of British American Insurance Co. At all stages of his life he was a passionate sailor, exploring the North Atlantic and the Caribbean on various sailboats and ultimately his 44-foot yawl, Ariel V, on which he and Joke lived and traveled for four years. In 1989 he settled in Milbridge. He was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Pam Hubbard. He is survived by his wife, Joke; four children: sons, Frank Vanderschoot of Ponte Vedra, Fla., John Vanderschoot of Gainesville, Fla., and Hens Vanderschoot Jr., of Tigard, Ore., and his second daughter, Ari Vanderschoot of Maui, Hawaii; his sister, Lily Pusey; and four grandchildren, Brandon and Sophia Vanderschoot of Gainesville, Fla., Kai Vanderschoot of Tigard, Ore., and West Point graduate, David Hubbard of Terrell, N.C.
