LUBEC – Merrill Edward Mahar, 85, died Aug. 6, 2010, at his home. He was born May 26, 1925, in Lubec, son of the late Robert E. and Louise (Henry) Mahar. He grew up in Lubec and after school worked a short time for American Can Co., before moving to Connecticut. There he worked for Pratt & Whitney, and then at Ulrich Steel for many years until his retirement. After retirement he returned to Lubec, where he enjoyed working at Booth Fisheries until its closing. He was a life member of the Methodist church. He enjoyed raising birds, gardening and playing cards. He is survived by nieces, Noreen and husband, Walter Cooke, Christy and husband, Mike Stock, and Marcia and husband, Bill Jackson; special great-nephews, Josiah and Jared and family; special great-niece, Tara Cooke, several other nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Lloyd, Josiah, Richard, James, Charles, Hollis and Aaron; and a sister, Evelyn. Friends are invited to visit with the family 1 p.m. until the time of funeral service Monday, Aug. 9, at Lubec Christian Temple Church, with services held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Alan Andraeas officiating. Burial will be afterward at Split Hill Cemetery, West Lubec. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations in his memory may do so to Lubec Christian Temple Church or West Lubec Methodist Church. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Machias and Lubec.
