SCARBOROUGH – James A. “Jim” MacDonald, 85, died Aug. 9, 2010, surrounded by his family at Maine Medical Center. James was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Oxbow, the son of George and Isa (Anderson) MacDonald. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1943. A year later he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps in Pensacola, Fla. Jim worked for Great Northern Paper Co. and Maine Grafton Lumber, Ashland. He also worked in the steel industry for many years, retiring from Burtco Inc., Westminister Station, Vt. He was a member for 60 years and past master of Pioneer Lodge No. 72, Ashland, and member of West Scarborough United Methodist Church. His gentle, kind, humorous nature was loved by all. He enjoyed gatherings with family and friends, a good book, a variety of music, a game of cribbage, road trips – especially those to Bonita Beach, Fla.- and using his road atlas to track any family member’s trip. He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth McKean and Alice Rafford; and a brother, Dana MacDonald. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ida Mae (Hackett) of Scarborough; three daughters, Karolyn and her husband, Bruce Simpson, of Scarborough, Rachel and her husband, Wolfgang Jansmann, of Saco, and Etta and her husband, Keith Jackson, of North Yarmouth; one grandson, James Simpson and his wife, Courtney, of Old Orchard Beach; three stepgrandsons, Christopher Jansmann and his wife, Paula, of Green Valley, Ariz., Andrew Jansmann and his wife, Irene, and their son, John, of Cumberland Center, and Timothy Jansmann and his wife, Roberta, of Vail, Ariz.; three brothers, Chester MacDonald and his wife, Clarice, of East Eddington, Albert MacDonald and his wife, Janis, of Ashland, and Dean MacDonald of Oxbow; two sisters, Ada Lovley of Benton, and Ann and her husband, Sidney Tripp, of North Raymond; many cherished nieces and nephews from the right coast to the left coast. A visiting hour will be held 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route One, Scarborough, with a funeral service 12:30 p.m. Interment will be private at a later date. In memory of James, contributions may be made to Scarborough Rescue or West Scarborough United Methodist Church.
