HAMPDEN – Norma A. (Randall) Gilman passed away peacefully Aug. 13, 2010, at a Bangor health care facility, from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. Norma was born July 7, 1932, in Island Falls, daughter of the late Claude and Claribel (Willey) Randall. Norma was a 1950 graduate of Island Falls High School. She graduated from Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, dedicating the rest of her life to serving others. She served as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Air Force and worked several years as a nurse for pediatrician, Dr. Frederick Emery, in Bangor. Norma also taught at Hampden Academy as a teacher’s aide in special education. She worked for many years at Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, retiring as the assistant director of nursing in 1996, and continued to volunteer there for several years after her retirement. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, relaxing at camp, sewing, knitting, berry picking, gardening and helping with the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race. Norma will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and caregiver. Norma is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Llewellyn “Spook” Gilman Jr. of Hampden; daughters, Laurie Gilman and her partner, Pam Famous, of North Yarmouth and Amy Gilman and her husband, John Arimond, and grandchildren, Corina Arimond and Declan Arimond, all of Woodend, New Zealand; sister, Carol French of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Bernice Randall of Houlton; as well as several nieces and nephews. Norma was predeceased by her parents; and by her brother, Roger Randall. Norma’s family thanks the wonderful and caring staff at Westgate Manor for their love and support during the past 15 months. Family and friends are invited to visit 5-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Sanner officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Norma’s honor may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 170 Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
