PORTLAND – The Rev. Richard C. McCarthy Jr., 75, died Aug. 14, 2010, at Saint Joseph’s Manor, Portland, where he had resided for the past several years. He formerly resided on Pitt Street, Portland. The Rev. McCarthy was born in Portland, a son of Richard C. and Virginia Lappin McCarthy. He attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1952. He then served stateside with the U.S. Army, 1954-1956. He later graduated from St. Mary’s Seminary and the university in Baltimore. Father McCarthy studied philosophy at Glastonbury Monastery, Hingham, Mass., and theology at Maryknoll Seminary, Glen Ellyn, Ill. During 1968 and 1969, he served as a deacon at St. Joseph’s Church, Ellsworth, where his uncle, the Rev. Henry Lappin, was assigned. Father was ordained a Roman Catholic priest May 17, 1969, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception by the Most Rev. Peter L. Gerety. He subsequently served at St. Patrick’s Church, Ellsworth; St. Mary’s Church, Bangor; and St. John the Evangelist Church, South Portland. He retired in August 1982 due to declining health. Father McCarthy is survived by a sister, Joanne Dennis of Portland; two brothers, John K. “Jackie” McCarthy and his wife, Joan, of Cumberland, and David E. McCarthy and his wife, Vivian, of Falmouth; a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A reception of the body and liturgy of the hours will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave., Portland, where he will lie in state 4-7 p.m. A concelebrated Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at St. Pius X Church with the Most Rev. Richard J. Malone, doctor of theology, bishop of Portland as the principal celebrant. Burial will be after at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
