LINCOLN and VICTORIA, British Columbia – Hilda Smith Lovejoy passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, at Selkirk Place Nursing Home, Victoria, British Columbia, with her son, Louis and his wife, Katherine, at her bedside. She was born Feb. 7, 1913, in Jonesport. Hilda graduated from Mattanawcook Academy, Class of 1932. Hilda worked as executive secretary to the manager of Lincoln Worsted Mill for many years, and later as medical secretary for Dr. Weiss of Lincoln. From the late 1940s through the early 1960s, Hilda and Ben owned and operated the local IGA store in Lincoln. Ben and Hilda moved to California in the early 1960s to be closer to their sons, who were working in the aerospace industry there. She was executive secretary to the director of the Flight Test Division of North American Aviation during those years. After 20 years in Southern California, Ben and Hilda moved back east to Portland, residing there for 10 years. She joined Daughters of the American Revolution in 1981 and served as vice regent of the Elizabeth Wadsworth Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution in Portland from 1989 to 1992. In 1992 Ben and Hilda moved to Victoria, British Columbia, sponsored as landed immigrants by their son, Louis, and his Canadian wife, Katherine, who had retired there from California in 1989. She was predeceased by her parents, Lewis Smith and Annie (Simmons) of Jonesport; husband Jerome “Ben” of Victoria, British Columbia; brothers, Lewis of Fall River, Mass., Harris of Huntsville, Ala., Eugene of Lincoln and Ladwic of Miami; sister, Mildred of Kenai, Alaska; and her son, Jerome Michael, of Dearborn, Mich. Hilda is survived by sister, Barbara of Lewistown, Mont.; brothers-in-law, Phillip and wife, Leone (Babineau), of Portland and Evan of Lincoln; son, Louis and daughter-in-law, Katherine (Buziak), of Victoria, British Columbia; daughter-in-law, Joy (Dudley) Lovejoy of Dearborn, Mich.; granddaughter, Cherie (Lovejoy) Scanlon and husband, Thomas, of Windham; grandsons, Brian and wife, Annie, of White Lake, Mich., and Nicholas and wife, Marilyn (Devine), of Sooke, British Columbia; four great-grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. The family thanks the staff at Selkirk Place Nursing Home, Victoria, British Columbia, for their loving care of Hilda for the last 18 months. There will be a private service in Victoria, British Columbia, for family only. The casket will be transported to Clay Funeral Home, Lincoln, for a viewing and paying of last respects 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. Interment will be in the family plot at Lincoln Cemetery.
