ORONO – Miriam “Mim” (Berman) Cohen, 87, formerly of Eastport, died Aug. 16, 2010, at a Bangor hospital, after complications from recent surgery. Mim was born March 16, 1923, in Eastport, to Samuel and Ruth (Wolff) Berman and was the sister of the late Morton Berman. She was predeceased by her husband, Nathan Cohen, who died in 2002. They were married for 56 years. Mim was a long-time resident of Eastport. She attended Eastport schools and graduated from Boston University’s Sargent School of Physical Education. After graduation she worked as a physical education teacher in Winslow. She and Nate were married in Waterville in 1946. They soon returned to Eastport to work in the family business after the death of her father. They managed Berman’s Clothing Store until their retirement in 1974. Mim continued to live in Eastport until her move to the Orono Commons Nursing Home in 2004. Mim was an active and devoted volunteer for the city of Eastport, Washington County and the state of Maine. For many years she worked with the Girl Scouts, Meals for ME, the L. Brooks Varney Scholarship Fund, the Eastern Star and Eastport Health Care. She was a member of Maine Dental Advisory Board and Maine Human Services Council. Together with Nate, she served on the board of directors for Washington County Community Health and Counseling and the Workforce Investment Board of Washington County. She is survived by her brother’s children and many other nieces and nephews. Survivors include Sheila Berman and her husband, Robert Minton, of Andover, Mass., Gail Berman Stone and her husband, Tommy Stone, of Whitehouse, Texas, and David Berman of Bangor. She was the great-aunt of Jennifer Stone, Heather Stone and Aaron Minton; and the great-great-aunt of Aaliyah Shabaan. She will be remembered for her warmth, sense of humor and devotion to friends and family. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, One Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086, or a charity of one’s choice.
