ORONO – John “Tank” Ambrose died unexpectedly Aug. 21, 2010, of natural causes at his home. He was born June 20, 1960, in Bangor, son of the late Edwin and Mary (Wahl) Ambrose. He was a graduate of Orono High School, Class of 1978. In 1980, John went to work for James River Co., continuing his employment with Georgia Pacific until he became disabled. John was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. His passions, in addition to his children and grandchildren, were golfing and watching his son and grandsons play hockey. John enjoyed spending countless hours playing golf at Penobscot Valley Country Club where he was a longtime member. John’s biggest golf accomplishments were his holes-in-one on holes four and 14 at Penobscot Valley Country Club. John shared his passion for the game by teaching his son and grandsons to play and love the game of golf. In addition to golf, John was actively involved with Brewer Youth Hockey as a coach and board member for several years as his son moved through the program. His boisterous instructions and cheers will be missed at the hockey rink by all who knew him. Surviving are four children, Omekia A. Legassie and her husband, Joey, of Orrington, Brittany L. Davis of Brewer, Johnna M. Ambrose of Brewer, and John W. Ambrose II of Brewer; five grandchildren, Kodi J. Legassie, Cameron Legassie, Brea A. Smickle, Ella B.R. Davis and Brysin C. Davis; two brothers, Michael E. Ambrose and Richard W. Ambrose; a special uncle, Carl Ambrose; aunt, Phyllis Ambrose; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Carl Ambrose; a sister, Teresa A. Bowen; uncle, Franklin Ambrose; and aunt, Ida Ambrose. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at Riverside Cemetery, Bennoch Road, Orono, with the Rev. Steve Smith officiating.
