NEWPORT – Donald Coral Hewins, 88, of Carrollton, Ohio, when home to be with his Lord Sept. 4, 2010. He was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Dyer Brook, a son of Coral and Helen (Slater) Hewins. Don graduated from Merrill High School in 1938. When he was 17, he went to work at Hartland (Irving) Tannery for 171/2 cents an hour. In 1955, he married Anita (Hanson) Thurston. Don was a member of People’s United Methodist Church, Newport, for more than 50 years. He was also a member of Amsterdam Covenant Church for the past 21/2 years. Don is survived by his son, Mike and wife, Dianne Thurston, of Carrollton, Ohio, with whom he resided for the past 21/2 years; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Hughes of Waterbury, Conn., and Camilla and Harold Nutter of St. Albans; a brother, Rodney and Beverly Chute of Bowdoin; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife in 2006; a brother, Walter; and son, Larry. He was a treasure to our family and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held noon Friday, Sept. 10, at People’s United Methodist Church, Main Street, Newport, with the Rev. Ellen Bridge officiating.
