NEWBURGH – Georgie Mae (Bennett) Knight went home to her heavenly Father Sept. 5, 2010, at a Bangor nursing facility. Born Nov. 23, 1921, in Troy, she was the youngest child of George Daniel Bennett and Mabel Irene (Reynolds) Bennett. Georgie graduated from Unity High School in 1939. She married Paul Merrill Knight and they raised three children. They also raised a nephew, Nelson, for much of his childhood. Most of Mom’s adult life was lived in Newburgh. During their earlier years, she and Dad sometimes provided a home for foster children, neighbors and other family members. Their door was opened many times to help someone out. Mom worked hard alongside Dad as the typical farm wife. She could make a home out of a tired old farmhouse, doing many repairs herself and always trying to make do. She raised gardens and preserved food to make sure that we were provided for. Mom worked very hard her entire life, on the farm and also outside the home. After she and Dad stopped farming, she worked for many years in several area shoe shops. She enjoyed reading, gardening and puttering in her little woodshop. She loved animals of all kinds; cats, dogs, cows, pigs, chickens…she loved them all! Mom was definitely the glue that held our little family together. Georgie was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Paul; her son, Harlan L. Knight; her sisters, Gertrude and Verna Bennett, and Adele Sanborn; nephews, Nelson and Everett Sanborn; her special friend, Forrest O. Rogers; many other family members and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Jacquelyn Knight Aubrey and husband, Byron; her son, Wayne R. Knight; grandchildren, Brenda L. Gould and husband, John F. Haney, Dianne E. Travaglini and husband, Steven J. Travaglini Sr., Lorrie J. Knight-Tuthill and her husband, Arthur B. Tuthill Jr., Heather A. Knight, and Paul D. Knight; eight precious great-grandchildren, several much loved nieces and nephews, including her niece, Janet, who always seemed like a younger sister to her. Our mom could be a real character, as all who knew her can attest to. She could surprise folks with her sense of humor! We will always miss her wit. We express our thanks to the staff and volunteers at Stillwater Health Care who took such great care for Mom during the past three years. Those wonderful folks always made her feel very special. As she put it a few weeks ago, “These people here seem to think I’m really something!” God bless you guys. In keeping with Georgie’s wishes family and friends are invited to attended a graveside service 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at Chapman Cemetery, corner of Chapman Road and Kennebec Road, Newburgh, with Pastor Tim Boone, of East Dixmont Community Church, officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. Messages of condolence and memories may be shared through www.hampdengilpatrick.com. <
