PITTSFIELD – Gladys G. Cookson, 87, died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, in Pittsfield. She was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Pittsfield, daughter of Jerome and Lettie (Brooks) Gould. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Maine Central Institute, Class of 1941. She married Norman R. Cookson Dec. 27, 1941. Gladys was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. This was evident by the loving attention to detail she showed in caring for them. Among her many talents, she was a gifted seamstress and cook. Some of her hobbies included shopping, collecting fine things, berry picking with her grandchildren, solving crossword puzzles and making fine clothes. Gladys and Norman loved dancing together and spent 45 years of Saturday evenings traveling throughout Maine enjoying the local dance halls. She lived her life for her family and will be truly missed. She is survived by her two sons, Wayne Cookson of Boca Raton, Fla., and Craig Cookson of Jackson; four granddaughters, Jennifer Wells and her fiance, Conn Davidenko, of Canton, Ga., Kimberly Duncombe and her husband, David, of Pittsfield, Amanda Booker and her husband, Joshua, of Rockport and Nicole Cookson and her fiance, Andrew Peters, of Fishers, Ind.; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman R. Cookson, in 1988; and her five siblings, Helen, Arnold, Ethel, Freda and Evelyn. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, where a funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, with Pastor Bill Johnson officiating.
