ELLSWORTH – Carl A. Rogers, 96, died Oct. 8, 2010, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born June 7, 1914, in South Wallingford, Vt., the only son of Harold G. and Mary (Clark) Rogers. He graduated from Wallingford High, the University of Vermont and earned his Master of Science degree in extension education from Kansas State University in 1964. He was a member of the high school state champion debating team in 1929. At the University of Vermont, he was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity, and Key and Serpent Honor Society, captain and manager of the debate team, president and librarian of the university orchestra, played tuba in the university marching band, and was on the cross country and track team. He played viola in the Burlington Symphony Orchestra. He held numerous jobs in Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine before becoming Hancock County extension agent in 1944. There he started the Maine Extension Blueberry program, the first registered animal 4-H Dairy Club in Maine, had the first county east of the Kennebec River to have a majority of towns, 28-34, with active planning boards and received national recognition for his work with shoreland zoning. He helped organize Hancock County Planning Commission. He was co-author and photographer of the Christmas Wreath Manual, which was circulated through many states. Rogers trained officers and committees of extension groups, churches, and other groups to work more efficiently … he organized and taught square dance classes and trained square dance callers. Nutrition, both animal and human, was his special interest. In the years that no home economist was available for Hancock County, he led several weight control classes. He, with Walter Thompson and Larry Poulin, worked with hundreds of people to improve their use of food stamps and donated foods. This lead to Hancock County as being chosen one of three Maine counties to participate when the National Expanded Food and Nutrition program was started. Rogers was past president of Maine County Agents Association, secretary of New England County Agents Association, chairman of the Northeast region public relations committee of National County Agents Association. He received the distinguished service award of the National County Agents Association, in 1960. His community activities include membership in South Wallingford Union Congregational Church; First Congregational Church, Ellsworth; and Union Congregational Church UCC, Ellsworth Falls; moderator of Hancock/ Waldo Association; a 19-year member of it’s church and ministry commission; chair of the UCC Maine Conferences World Mission and a member of the executive committee of the Maine Conference board of directors. He co-authored the application for Down East Resource Conservation and Development Council, and was chairman when it received it’s first plaque for being the best in New England. He was past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of Ellsworth Rotary Club. Carl was a seventh degree Granger and member of Bayside Grange. He was raised a master Mason in Chipman Lodge No. 52, Wallingford, Vt., Jan. 1, 1936, and received dual membership in Lygonia Lodge No. 40 after moving to Ellsworth. He was a member of York and Scottish Rites, and Anah Shrine. He was past high priest of Acadia Chapter and past commander of Blanquefort Commandery. In 2002 he was awarded Knight Templar Cross of Honor. He was initiated in Waverly Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in 1936, past patron of Mansfield chapter in Vermont, Irene Chapter of Ellsworth and past Grand Patron of Maine Order of the Eastern Star of which he has served on many committees. Carl is survived by his daughter-in-law, Rae Rogers of Ellsworth; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Clifford of Ellsworth, Kenneth and wife, Deborah, and sons, Jacob and Adam of Solon, Ohio, Karen Proctor and husband, Rick, and their children, Courtney, Andrew and Caroline of Falmouth; nephew, Clifford DuBreuil of Alfred, N.Y.; and goddaughter, Sharon Young of Ellsworth. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Alice “Jackie”; their son, Edwin; and an infant son. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a Masonic service and Eastern Star service 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at First Congregational Church UCC, corner of Church Street and State Street, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Nicholas Davis presiding. Interment will be in the Rogers lot at Green Hill Cemetery, Wallingford, Vt.
