DEXTER – Gary E. Olmsted, 52, went to be with his Lord and Savior Oct. 17, 2010. He was born Feb. 10, 1958, in Dover-Foxcroft, a son of Roger and Marian (Weymouth) Olmsted. He enjoyed his many years at Pine Tree Camp, Belgrade, where he started attending summer camp when he was 7 years old. Gary attended Cerebral Palsy School, Bangor, Bangor High School and graduated fifth in his class from Dexter Regional High School, Class of 1979. He also attended the University of Maine, where he studied computer science. He was an assistant Scout leader with the Dexter area Cub Scouts and served for a number of terms on the board of directors with United Cerebral Palsy of Northeastern Maine. Gary ran a business from his home, Olmsted’s Printing, where he prepared the church bulletin for First Baptist Church, Dexter, where he was a member, and printed various business related items. He enjoyed the New England sports teams and watched all televised games. He was an inspiration to many people, proving to others that just because you are confined to a wheelchair, anything is possible. He enjoyed proving people wrong when he was told that he couldn’t go places or do certain things. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Jerry Townsend of Corinna; his siblings, Joanne and husband, Philip Robeson, of southern New Jersey, Kenneth and wife, Dianna, of Yarmouth, Ronald and wife, Traci, of Barnstead, N.H., Steven and wife, Haley, of Washington, and Dawn and husband, Steve Dobbs, of Danbury, Vt.; two stepbrothers, Scott Townsend of Seattle and Leland Townsend of Indianapolis; a stepsister, Kelly Townsend Cullen of Greenwood, Ind.; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and many friends. Gary was predeceased by his father, Roger. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at First Baptist Church, Dexter, with the Rev. Jay Brennan officiating.
