BANGOR – Kirtland A. York, 84, passed away passed away Oct. 9, 2010, at a Bangor hospital, after complications from an operation on his hip. During his early years, He worked on a large farm. He told stories of sheering a hundred sheep by hand and plowing the fields with horses. When things got tough for the farm, he joined the Army during the Korean War. He was trained to maintain the railway cars, which brought the wounded back to safety. He told stories of the wounded and dying, and getting railroad cars back on the track. After getting out of the Army, he went to work at Sears in 1953. “Yorkie,” as he was affectionately known by his fellow workers at Sears, worked in and managed their warehouse for 38 years. He was known for keeping everything neat and orderly, and was a hard worker who took pride in his job. Though in his later years he was quite deaf and visually impaired, and quite a quiet man, his sense of humor, laugh and acts of kindness will be missed by his relatives, friends and those at his assisted living home. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria; two sisters, Gladys York and Viola York Ellingwood; his brothers, Austin and Millard, and Dayton, who died as a baby; as well as his stepson, Fred Oxley. He is survived by his stepsons, George Oxley of Eddington and Danny Oxley of Ellsworth; his sister, Leona Ward of Bangor; many nieces and nephews, including Norris York of Eddington and Alicia Bergsten of Nebraska City, Neb. He often spoke highly of his grandson, Dillon.
