ASHLAND – Weldon A. Smith, 91, died unexpectedly Oct. 20, 2010, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born April 13, 1919, in Ashland, the son of Harry H. and Minnie (Sutherland) Smith. He was a U.S. Navy and Air Force veteran of World War II and Korean War, serving for 31 years, mostly in aircraft maintenance. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars LeBlanc-Junkins Post No. 9699, Ashland. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing cribbage at the VFW club. Weldon is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ichi (Sekita) Smith of Ashland; a stepdaughter, Teruko of Tokyo; one sister, Pauline Stoddard of Holden, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Ella Smith of Holden, Mass.; nephews, Peter Stoddard and wife, Janet, of Holden, Mass., and Gary Smith of Long Island, N.Y.; a niece, Sandy Smith of Holden, Mass.; two stepgranddaughters, two great-stepgrandchildren and five great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Robert Smith. Relatives and friends may call 4-5 p.m. Saturday at Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland. No formal funeral service will be held. Private interment will be at a later date in the family lot at Rural Cemetery, Worcester, Mass.
