BANGOR – Sylvia Erb, wife of the late William H. Erb, died Nov. 1, 2010, in Bangor. She was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Canon City, Colo., the daughter of Harrison and Helen (Andrews) Small. A graduate of Hollis High School in New Hampshire, Mrs. Erb earned a Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology from Colby Sawyer College, New London, N.H. Before her marriage, she worked for several years in the laboratories of New England Women and Children’s Hospital, Boston. After her husband completed his service with the U.S. Navy they moved to Castine, where she was active in the Trinitarian church, Cub Scouts, Parent-Teacher Association and the Academy Wives Club. In 1981, they moved to Orono. After her husband’s death in 1986, she continued to do volunteer work for friends, the Salvation Army and Church of Universal Fellowship where she was a member. She will be missed by the birds, squirrels and deer that came to her yard. She is survived by two sons and their families whom she loved dearly, Randolph and Diane, William, Katherine and her husband, Peter Lary, Richard and Shannon and Garrett. She also leaves a sister and her husband, Mary and Philip Whalen of Phoenix; two brothers, Dr. W. David Small of Boise, Idaho, and Donald Small and his wife, Shelley, of Castine. Sylvia is grateful for the special attention and love of her many friends and family members. As she wished, a private committal service will be held in the family lot at Castine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salvation Army, 65 South Park St., Bangor, ME 04401 or a charity of one’s choice.
