BELFAST, Maine — Civil court turned less than civil Wednesday when an Augusta man allegedly yelled threats to his ex-wife and her father after a hearing Wednesday at Belfast District Court. He later was arrested for the incident.

Richard S. Mahoney II, 37, had been at the family hearing with his ex-wife and didn’t like the way it turned out, according to Belfast Police Chief Jeffrey Trafton.

When he was outside the courthouse and they were inside, he allegedly yelled at them, the chief said. The scene was witnessed by court security officers and Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham.

Mahoney left, but his ex-wife filed a complaint against him. She already had had a permanent protection from abuse order granted against him, according to Trafton.

Belfast police also learned that Mahoney is on probation from a previous offense and has a probation officer in Augusta, whom they spoke with regarding the alleged threats.

Mahoney turned himself in to the Belfast Police Department on Thursday, and he was charged with domestic terrorizing and violation of a probation order. He was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where he remained Friday, according to the chief.
