CALAIS – Harley Clark Jr., 79, died peacefully in the arms of his wife on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2010, with his loving family by his side at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. As part of the Veterans Home tradition to honor the deceased veterans, Harley was draped in the American flag and escorted by his family and their staff. Harley was born Feb. 9, 1931, in Calais, the son of Harley Clark Sr. and Elizabeth (Lawless) Clark. Harley attended schools in Milltown and graduated from Calais High School in 1948. After graduation Harley served in the U.S. Navy for four years and fought in the Korean War. While in the Navy he married the love of his life, May Belle Cobb, and they remained happily married for the next 58 years. After being honorably discharged Harley returned to Calais and worked as a carpenter on Cutler Naval Towers. He then began a 39-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired as postmaster in Calais. Harley was a man of great faith. He was a dedicated member of Second Baptist Church, Calais, and the last few years faithfully attended Bangor Baptist Church. He lived his faith to the fullest in all aspects of his life. Harley was very active in the Calais community. He was particularly involved with the local athletic programs, enthusiastically supporting Little League baseball, the local Blue Devil athletic teams and Calais Athletics Boosters Club. It was important to Harley that every child had an opportunity to participate in sporting activities. Harley was also a member of St. Croix Lodge No. 46 AF & AM, Knights Templar and Shriners. He was presented with an award denoting his 50 years as a Mason. He was also a past commander of American Legion, Calais. Harley was an avid sportsman and registered Maine guide. He enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing and guiding hunters throughout the Howard and Nash’s Lake area. Harley took great pleasure spending time relaxing with his family during summers at the camp on Howard Lake, where they enjoyed water skiing, swimming and hours of fishing. On the weekends in the winter Harley took his family to Howard Lake for snowmobiling, ice fishing and skating parties. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Norman Clark and Harold Clark; and his brother-in-law, John St. Pierre. Harley is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, May Belle Cobb Clark; his four children, Teresa Clark Cassidy and her husband, Edmund Cassidy, of St. Simons Island, Ga., Glen D. Clark and his wife, Kristina, of Gorham, Lori Clark Frost and her husband, James Frost, of Brewer and Harley Walter “Wally” Clark and his wife, LaVonne, of Catonsville, Md.; his 10 beloved grandchildren, Ryan Cassidy and his wife, Beth, of Brewer, Erin Cassidy Lawson and her husband, Will, of Valdosta, Ga., Meghan Cassidy of Valdosta, Ga., Chelsea Clark and Alyssa Clark of Gorham, James Frost Jr. and his wife, Melissa, of Windham, Katie Franzoni and her husband, Matthew, of Gray, Andrew Frost of Clifton, and Austin Clark and Alex Clark of Catonsville, Md.; his much-loved great-grandchildren, Austin and Courtney Cassidy of Brewer and Parker Frost of Windham; his sister, Joyce St. Pierre; and three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Clark, Gloria Clark and Kay Clark. Friends and golfing buddies in Lake Wales, Fla., and Calais will be greatly missed. The family expresses sincere gratitude to the doctors and staff at Maine Veterans Home. Their dedication and the love they had for Harley and his family will always be remembered. Funeral services for Harley will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at Second Baptist Church, Calais. Prior to the service, there will be a public visitation 10 a.m. at Second Baptist Church. Burial will be afterward with military honors at Calais Cemetery.
