BUCKSPORT – Howard L. Cottrell, 84, went to be with the Lord Nov. 13, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born Feb. 18, 1926, in Providence, R.I., the son of Howard and Gladys (Johnson) Cottrell. Howard attended Cranston High School, Cranston, R.I., and played on their undefeated championship team in 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served as a machinist’s mate aboard the USS West Point and USS Kennehago. He worked for Pratt & Whitney, Hartford, Conn., and Brown & Sharpe, Providence, R.I. He was a chicken farmer in Bucksport from 1957 to 1970. From 1970 to 1986, he worked as a machinist at General Electric, Bangor, where he had many friends and fun times. After his retirement, making wooden toys and lawn ornaments, and taking car rides made him happy. He was a member of Evangelical Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Ruth (Annis) Cottrell; his sister, Nancy Birdsall; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ring; brother-in-law, Daniel Ring; and good friend, Maude Bulduc. He is survived by two sons, Bob Cottrell and wife, Cleo, of Verona Island and David Cottrell and wife, Teresa, of Bucksport; grandchildren, Chad Cottrell, Ellen Cottrell and husband, Jack Forman, Evan Cottrell and wife, Breanna, and Jennifer Pendleton; nieces and nephews, Barbara Ring, George Birdsall, Gloria Bray, John Birdsall and Nancy Henson and their families; and cousins, Linda Broccoli, Joyce Bullard, Carol Pennington and Bruce Ward. A graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport. The family invites friends to a reception at Edward K. Arey Community Center after the service. In lieu of cards and flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Evangelical Baptist Church, P.O. Box Q, Bucksport, ME 04416 or the Activity Fund at Maine Veterans Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
