PORTLAND – Henrietta “Happy” Jackson passed away Nov. 16, 2010, with her loving family at her side at The Cedars Nursing Facility, after a courageous battle with cancer. Henrietta was born in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Joseph H. and Inez Lear. During her younger years, she lived in Lamoine. She attended local schools and graduated from Husson College, where she earned her general clerical diploma in 1949. Happy met her husband, Ken, after moving to Augusta. She operated a yarn shop and taught knitting out of her home for many years. She was employed by LaVerdiere’s Drug as a buyer. The family moved to Portland in 1975. Happy was a lifetime member of Order of Eastern Star. She and Ken were also lifetime members of the Good Sam Club and enjoyed traveling in their motor home as often as they could. She and Ken visited all 50 states and most of Canada. Once while traveling in Churchill, Manitoba, she had a rare encounter with a wild polar bear and was able to pet him on the nose. She was an active member of Southern Maine Volksport Association and successfully completed a “walk” in all the state capitols. Happy was a member of North Deering Congregational Church. She held onto her faith throughout her life. She would do anything for anyone. She was always smiling and could always ease someone’s pain with just her sense of humor. Happy made it her goal in life to be the best friend, companion, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. All who knew her will sadly miss her carefree spirit. Her husband of 54 years, Kenneth Jackson of Portland, survives her. Her son, Richard Jackson and his wife, Shirley, of Otisfield, and granddaughters, Jennifer Denis of Texas and Emily Jackson of Otisfield; her daughter, Doreen Paul and her husband, Francis, and granddaughter, Meghan, all of Portland; her great-grandchildren, Whitney Denis, Jordan Westgate, Lauren Denis and Christian Denis of Texas; and her sister, Edna Coyne of Lamoine, survives her. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brother, Joe. The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Cedars Nursing Care Facility for the extraordinary care and compassion while caring for Happy during the past month. They also thank all of her friends for their comfort and support throughout the years. A graveside memorial service will be in June 2011 at East Lamoine Cemetery with time of service to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lamoine Historical Society, Lamoine, ME 04605. Arrangements by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
