BAILEYVILLE, CALAIS and BANGOR – Doris Harriman Mitchell died Nov. 30, 2010, with her loving family and caregivers by her side at a Bangor health care facility, after a long illness. She was born March 1, 1925, in Baileyville, to Frank Lyle and Deborah Day Harriman. She attended Woodland schools and later on in life married Melvin John Mitchell. They had four daughters who they were very proud of. After her children were grown, she and a couple of friends started a catering business, and after many years decided to retire. Not liking retirement, she and her friend, Dorothy James, worked for Treworgy’s Pharmacy, Woodland and Calais. After retiring from Treworgy’s, she decided to volunteer for Meals for ME at Palmer Lane Estates, until her illness took over. Doris was a member of Eastern Star, Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 23, Spednic Club and People’s United Methodist Church, Baileyville. When Doris moved to Bangor with her daughter, Barbara, her health started to deteriorate and she moved to Westgate Manor, where she received excellent care. She was predeceased by the father of her children, Melvin John Mitchell; her first grandchild, Karen Marie James; great-grandchildren, Gage and Hunter Buzzell; her sister, Esther Harriman Wheelock; and brothers, Frank Lyle Harriman and his wife, Grace Messah Harriman, George and his wife, Florence Grant Harriman, Alonzo and his wife, Grace Seamans Harriman, and Raymond Harriman; brother-in-law, Dean Mitchell; and a very special friend, Dorothy Goode James. Doris is survived by one sister, Elvira Harriman Farrar; and her four daughters, Carolyn Mitchell James and her husband, Jim, Brenda Mitchell Tozier and her husband, Elwood, Melva Mitchell Currier and her companion, Ken, and Barbara Mitchell Pendleton. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Dorothy Mitchell James and her husband, Bob; and sister-in-law, Blanche Wahl Haskins. Surviving grandchildren and their families include: Gregory and his wife, Heather Irving James, and their children, Taylor, Morgan and Courtney, Jennifer Tozier Pratt and her husband, Scott, and their son, Mitchell, Wayne Mitchell and his daughter, Felicia, and her son, Tristan, Stephanie Philips Buzzell and her husband, Andrew, and their son, Michael and his companion, Cassie Niles, Senior Master Sgt. Stacy Leighton and his wife, Tracey, and their children, Mykel and his wife, Sarah, and their son, Carson, and Stacy Jr. and his companion, Veronica, and their son, James; many dear nieces and nephews. A private, immediate family burial will take place in the spring in Baileyville. The family would like their mother to be remembered for her warm smile and her caring ways for others. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Westgate Manor, 750 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401.
