GREENVILLE – Bernice E. Smith, 94, died Dec. 9, 2010, at C.A. Dean Hospital, Greenville. She was born Feb. 7, 1916, in Greenville, daughter of Joseph and Emily (Doyon) Clark. She graduated as valedictorian of Greenville High School, Class of 1934, and received her registered nurse’s license in 1937 from Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary, now part of Maine Medical Center, Portland. Bernice returned to Greenville and has worked at C.A. Dean Hospital for many years, “never really retiring,” in her words. For a time she served as director of nursing at the hospital, and was a member of the hospital auxiliary. She also spent a great deal of time helping folks that were home bound, running errands, taking blood pressures and caring for those who needed help. She was a longtime member of Union Evangelical Church, Greenville. She was a member of Ready Workers Society, where she served as president for three years and as secretary for many years. She was a past patron of Mowidausis Chapter of Eastern Star, Greenville; and Susie Carr Chapter of Eastern Star, Sangerville. As the wife of John Smith, chief fire warden for the area, she spent a great deal of time assisting her husband, answering phones and issuing fire permits. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years in 2001; a daughter and her husband, Emilynn “Kitty” and Bart Harvey; a daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Jack Kirscht; eight brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Murray and her husband, Darryl, of Greenville; a sister, Colleen Martin of Belfast; a brother, Duane Clark and his wife, Ann, of Florida; five grandchildren, Robert and Robbin Harvey of Wisconsin, Jan and Tom Barbas of Massachusetts, Deborah Schechter and Carl Lipo of California, Mindy and Nick Hanson of Shirley and Kelly Murray and her friend, Seth Ostrosky, of Dover-Foxcroft; six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Union Evangelical Church, Greenville, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Veon officiating.
