NORTHFIELD – Gordon Feeney, husband of the late Nellie (Lindsey) Feeney, passed away Dec. 8, 2010, at a Brewer rehabilitation center. Gordon had been battling a number of medical conditions for several years, most recently cancer, and died peacefully in his sleep. Born and raised in Machias, the second oldest child of Colin and Electa (Sinford) Feeney, he was a lifelong resident of Northfield. He leaves his daughters, Wen Willey of Milbridge and Reagan Feeney and Richard Levine of Venice, Calif.; his son, Brett Feeney and Tricia Largay of Brewer; two grandchildren, Trenton Willey and baby, Zoe Alexa Levine; his brother, Glen and Sandra Feeney of Jackman; and his sisters, Rowena and Ed Higginbotham Sr. of Frederick, Md., and Alice and James Ackley Jr. of Machias. He was predeceased by his wife, Nellie (Lindsey) Feeney, in 1999; brother, Gregg Feeney, in 2001; and sister, Carolyn Hatton, in 2010. Warmest and sincerest thanks are extended to all the folks in the community who rallied to help Gordon through tough times, with a special thanks to siblings, Glen Feeney and Alice Ackley; dear friends, Ann Gaddis and Crystal Coffin; and son, Brett Feeney, who has been the Rock of Gibraltar for the past 10 years. After graduating from Machias High School in 1960 Gordon attended Washington State Teacher’s College. With a passion and aptitude for math, architecture and raw materials, he left college to pursue a vocation in contracting and construction. His work, spanning almost 50 years, can be seen across Washington County in the form of schools, hand-crafted wooden cabinets and numerous residences. Most notably, Gordon proudly constructed the bridge and walkway at Bad Little Falls Park, Machias. He epitomized everything one would expect from a Maine man. He possessed an unmatched love and respect for the outdoors; he enjoyed many types of hunting and fishing, particularly fly-fishing, canoeing, camping and nature walks; and could literally recall upon sight the name of every single flower, tree and plant in the Maine woods. His greatest love, however, was his wife, Nellie, and he could be found many Saturday nights at the Wesley Dance engaged in one of his favorite hobbies, dancing. In fact, the Wesley Dance is where Gordon met his beloved wife and best friend. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias, where a reception will be after the service.
