GREENBUSH and MILFORD – Durward W. “Tarz” Carroll, 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, as he was surrounded by his family. He was born March 5, 1924, the son of Linwood and Angie (Pelkey) Carroll. Tarz was a kind, peaceful and good man that would do anything for anybody. He enjoyed people and had a talent for making friends with just about anyone. He was an old fashion gentleman who would greet you with a warm smile and firm handshake. Family was always his first priority and he was especially close with his three brothers. He was a founding member of Olamon Faith Bible Church, and his church and religion were an important part of his everyday life. Tarz proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. during World War II, where he was stationed in the South Pacific for three years. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3381, Old Town, and would march annually in the Veterans Day Parade in Bangor. Tarz started working at a young age and throughout his career he has had many different jobs. He spent most of his working life with the state of Maine Department of Transportation, retiring after more than 30 years of service as a supervisor from the Enfield lot. Some of his other jobs included working the log drives on the river, operator for Diamond International, truck driver for many different companies and his favorite position, grading the roads at Baxter State Park. Tarz loved to travel and watch ice hockey, and was a season ticket holder to the University of Maine, Orono, Black Bears Hockey Team since the program first started in 1977. Tarz is survived by his wife of 26 years, Jane (Burr); son, Richard McLaughlin; three grandchildren, Amy Eastman and her husband, David, Alden McLaughlin and his wife, Sandi, and Elizabeth Evans and her husband, Jim; six great-grandchildren; Aaron, Randy and Corey Eastman and Delani McLaughlin and Tanner and Saige Evans; three brothers, Linwood and his wife, Gwendola, Orman and his wife, Doris, and Elden and his wife, Sharon; brother-in-law, Jacob Smart; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Tarz is predeceased by his first wife of 36 years, Evelyn (Dunn); his daughter, who was the light of his life, Pamela McLaughlin; his sister, Sharon Smart; and his faithful chocolate lab, Mocha. At Tarz’s request, there will be no visitation hours. A celebration of life will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at Olamon Faith Bible Church. All guests are welcome to attend a gathering at Helen S. Dunn School after the memorial service. Interment will be held in the spring at Gould’s Ridge Cemetery, and will be announced at a later date.
