WOODLAND – Hayden Leroy Sutherland, 93 died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home, Caribou, with family by his side. He was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Woodland, son of the late Adelbert and Marie (Hardacker) Sutherland and the eldest of a family of 12 children. Hayden attended Woodland schools and graduated from Caribou High School in 1935. Hayden was very proud of family and his farm, and loved to reminisce on both with whoever would lend an ear. After being in the military, serving as an aircraft mechanic during World War II, he lived in Caribou for a short time and returned again to Woodland. He was a self-employed potato farmer until retirement in 1981. He was an avid gardener for many years and was especially proud of his telephone peas. Hayden was a 60 years member of Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, Caribou. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 61 years, Shirley (Spear) Sutherland, are his four children, Rebecca E. Sutherland of New Sweden, Adelbert W. Sutherland, Brian H. Sutherland and his wife, Jane, all of Caribou, and Paul L. Sutherland and his wife, Debbie, of Woodland; and four grandchildren, Taylor H. Sutherland and his wife, Ingrid, of Mapleton, Kyle E. Sutherland of Seattle, Logan R. and Gabrielle B. of Woodland. He is also survived by four sisters, Esther Page of Caribou, Eugenia “Jean” Gardner and her husband, Elden, of Portage, Bertha “Betty” Branscom of Caribou, and Judith “Judi” Greenier and her husband, Louis, of Cross Lake; three brothers, Stanley of Hebron, Conn., Willis and his wife, Gloria, of Caribou, and Russell of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Bert Turner of Washburn; numerous nieces and nephews. Hayden was predeceased by three sisters, Gretchen Gallant and husband, Harold, Margaret Turner and husband, Bert, and Margorie Giggie and husband, Colie; brother, Roland Sutherland, who died very young; and brothers-in-law, Vincent Page, Edward Branscom and Robert Pelletier. A very special thank you from the family goes out to the nurse and staff at the Maine Veterans Home. Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where services will begin 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Bentum officiating.
