MIDDLEBORO, Mass. – Frank L. Littlefield, 78, formerly of Orono and Falmouth, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was the husband of the late Betsey (Lay) Littlefield, who predeceased him in 2007, after 51 years of marriage. Born Sept. 17, 1932, in Bangor, Frank was son of the late Seth and Eva (Jones) Littlefield. After graduating from high school in 1950, he served in the U.S. Air Force. While stationed in South Carolina, he met his wife, Betsey. They married and moved back to Orono, where he attended and graduated from the University of Maine. During his career Frank was a teacher and a coach in Mechanic Falls; Falmouth; Nashua, N.H.; and Middleboro, Mass. Sports were his passion. He coached basketball, track and field, cross-country and soccer. He was State of Maine Track and Field Coach of the Year twice during his 10 years of coaching in Maine, and one of his basketball teams in Falmouth was runner-up in the state finals. He had been recognized numerous times and in many ways for his dedication to the teams he coached. This past November he was inducted into Middleboro (Mass.) Sports Hall of Fame. After retiring from a long teaching career in Middleboro, Mass., Frank and his wife, Betsey, moved to Clermont, Fla., where they resided in the senior community of Kings Ridge. They enjoyed the six years they had there, participating in the many activities offered, especially golf. Frank is survived by his children, Tracy and her husband, Bernard Gosson, Chad Littlefield and his wife, Stephanie, Cori and her husband, Fred Conley, all of Middleboro, Mass., Lance Littlefield and his wife, Kristen, of Newport, R.I., and Kelly Croteau and her husband, Andre, of Davenport, Fla. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; a brother, Seth Littlefield of Nevada; and sisters, Ginnie Mucci and Phronie Bouchard, both of Clearwater, Fla. A funeral service will be held 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Sacred Heart Church, 340 Centre St., Middleboro, Mass. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St., Middleboro, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Middleboro All Sports Boosters Association, and sent to Middleboro High School, care of athletic director, 71 East Grove St., Middleboro, MA 02346.
