BELFAST – Charles H. Lang, 95, passed away peacefully Dec. 24, 2010, in Belfast. He was born May 6, 1915, in Melrose, Mass., son of E. Copeland and Mildred (Dennis) Lang. He moved to Belfast in 1928 and graduated from Crosby High School and Tabor Academy, Marion, Mass. He attended the University of Maine, Orono. He was united in marriage to Emma G. Tweedie, Jan. 1, 1940. Charlie was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving his country in the Pacific during World War II. He worked at Mathews Bros. Co. for many years, and was the president of the company from 1952 until his retirement in 1978. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid golfer who had 10 holes-in-one in his lifetime, the first at age 45 and the last at age 89. As a Shriner he was an active member of Anah Temple and Waldo County Shrine Club. Charlie served as potentate of Anah Temple in 1960. His memberships also included Belfast Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 24, where he was a member for 64 years; Royal Arch Masons of Belfast; Palestine Commandery No. 14 Knights Templar, Belfast; and Royal Order of Jesters. Charlie also served on the board of Melrose Freepress and Belfast Planning Board. In addition he was a representative in the Maine State Legislature. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Emma; and three sisters, Catherine, Virginia and Marjorie. Charlie is survived by his daughter, Meredith A. Lang of Belfast; his special friend, Catherine C. Allen of Seal Harbor; nephews, Peter D. Haddock and his daughter, Jennifer L. Haddock, and Walter M. Tweedie; and nieces, Marjorie H. Smith, Susan Fultz and Rebecca Tenan. A memorial service will be held in the spring as well as a reception in his memory.
