WARREN – Lawrence L. Grant, 67, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, surrounded by his family at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was born July 8, 1943, in Harrington, the youngest of 12 children of Owen and Grace Hartford Grant. Educated in local schools, he attended Harrington High School. He served eight years as a cook in the U.S. Air Force, with a tour in Vietnam from 1964 to 1965. He later worked at Maine State Prison and retired from Maine State Warden Service after 23 years of exemplary service. In March 2010, he was awarded a Lifetime Distinguished Service Award from Maine Warden Service. Up until the time of his illness, he worked as an officer at Knox County Courthouse, and in 2006, was awarded the Judicial Branch Roy Rice Award. A devoted grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Papa.” Larry was predeceased by six sisters, Carolyn Grant, Marjorie Hall, Corinne Tracey, Maurie Robinson, June Dinsmore and Ethelyn Guptill; and two brothers, Irving Grant and Kenneth Grant. In addition to his wife of 28 years, Doris Grant of Warren, he is survived by eight children, Lawrence Grant Jr. of Veazie, Roxanne Keller and her husband, Peter, of Seattle, Linda Edgecomb and her husband, Jeffrey, of Orono, Timothy Grant of Augusta, Joseph Grant, Donald Grant, both of Bangor, John Wilbur of Orland and Joanna Montgomery and her husband, Raymond, of St. George; five special grandchildren, Ellery, Haley, Seanna, Presley and Joseph Jr.; three brothers, Shirley Grant of Alexandria, Va., Carlton Grant and his wife, Mavis, of Jonesport and Harold Grant and his wife, Laura, of Warren; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Grant-French of Columbia and Glenda Grant of Harrington; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends and relatives are invited to visit 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland, where a celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. A reception will be after at the funeral home’s reception center at 104 Limerock St. Spring interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Harrington.
