ARGYLE – Margaret Louise Smith, 83, died Jan. 6, 2011, in West Palm Beach, Fla. Margaret was born April 13, 1927, in New York City, the daughter of Patrick Webb and Nellie McTague, who came to New York from Ireland. She grew up a city girl, who loved music and dancing, especially with her cousin, Josie. A longtime resident of Argyle, Margaret had moved to West Palm Beach, Fla., in October 2009, for a winter visit, but for health reasons was never able to return to her home in Maine. In 1949 she met her husband, Charles, at a restaurant where he was tending bar. The family story is that he asked her, “What are you drinking brat?” and so a romance began that lasted until Charles’ death in 2007. Despite being a city girl she came to enjoy the outdoors and camping out. She was very proud of being able to turn out perfectly enormous breakfasts for her family on an old camp stove. Margaret made friends easily. She was always ready to lend a hand or help local children with their homework. She was fiercely loyal to her family. She was also the best mom four guys could ever have. Margaret is survived by her four sons, Charles, Patrick, Bruce and Kurt; grandchildren, Erica, Kimberly, Desirae and Colin; great-grandchildren, Alexa Lee and Isabella; as well as numerous cousins and relations. Margaret also had many good friends in Maine, especially Nancy Burns, Debbie Horne, Mike Shirley and Marilyn Barry, from New York and now Pennsylvania, Josie is still dancing, and from, Florida Linda Lifton and Judy Zoidis. Margaret is also survived by her golden retriever, Sam, who was useless when a moose walked through the yard a couple of years ago. Services will be announced in the spring by Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery, Argyle.
