DOVER-FOXCROFT – John R. McCarthy, 86, husband of Virginia (Jackson) McCarthy, passed away Jan. 7, 2011, surrounded by his family at Mayo Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Portland, the son of John and Phoebe (Arsenault) McCarthy. John had worked at area woolen mills and retired from Dexter Shoe Co. after many years. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Virginia of Dover-Foxcroft; a son, Daniel McCarthy and his family of Hermon; two daughters, Patricia Johnson and her family of Dover-Foxcroft and Kathleen Polk and her family of Tennessee; two sisters, Theresa Jack and Jean Gillie, both of Nova Scotia; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and seven siblings. A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring in the family lot at Gray Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home.
