MILLINOCKET – Willard L. Monahan, 73, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, with his wife by his side at his home, after a brief illness. Billy was born Sept. 4, 1937, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, to Willard and Ethel (Remick) Monahan. He was a loving husband and family man who retired from Great Northern Paper Co. after 40 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, former Army National Guard member, an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Millinocket Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge, Fin and Feather Club, and a volunteer for Katahdin Area Support Group. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and time at his camp at South Twin Lake. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joan Crawford Monahan; and three children: daughter, Holly and husband, James Hartley, of Mattawamkeag and sons, Patrick of North Carolina and Ryan and wife, Lori, of Florida; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Casey, Sara, Kara, Grant, Gentry, Gradyn and Gavin; two great-grandchildren, Owen and Micah; one brother, Laird and Gail of Florida; six sisters-in-law, Marjorie Monahan of Ontario, Mary Monahan of Lewiston, Virginia and Fred Olsen of Brewer, Shirley Fischer of New York, Pat and Jim Harvey of Old Town and Diane and Paul Noddin of East Millinocket; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; a son, David; two brothers, Robert and Eugene; and in-laws, Donis and Ida Rogers, and Reginald Crawford. A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Millinocket, with the Rev. Robert W. Landry, presiding. Donations may be made to Katahdin Area Support Group or St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Arrangements by Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast.
