LEESBURG, Fla., and PITTSFIELD – Charles Perley Davis, 97, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at Cornerstone Hospice Center, Tavares, Fla., after a short illness. He was born June 30, 1913, in Blaney Ridge, New Brunswick, son of Harry and Medora (Parker) Davis. He attended schools in New Brunswick and came to live in Pittsfield in 1930. He and his father were engaged in farming. He also worked at Pioneer Woolen Mill, Pittsfield, and Irving Tanning Co., Hartland, from which he retired in 1986. He married Mary Ackroyd, Oct. 4, 1950, in Pittsfield. They made their home in Pittsfield for 39 years, and moved to Newport in 1989. Later they spent winters in Leesburg, Fla., and summers at their camp on Round Pond, Plymouth, which he built with the help of his oldest son, Frank. He enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to visit Hawaii, Italy, Scandinavia and many European countries. He was a past member of Pittsfield Grange and Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, Pittsfield. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary; son, Franklin Charles Davis of Dorchester, Mass.; daughter, Jean Davis Zarate and her husband, George, of South Portland; son, Richard Parker Davis and his wife, Shelly, of Wilton; and son, Kenneth James Davis and his wife, Lori, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. He is also survived by grandchildren, Mary Zarate, Michael Zarate, Spencer Davis and his wife, Krista, and Sarah Davis; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Ethel Dunton of Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held in the summer with interment in the family lot at Pittsfield Village Cemetery.
