NORTHPORT – Eleanor L. Small, 85, died peacefully Jan. 12, 2011, surrounded by her loving family at her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. Eleanor was born Sept. 23, 1925, daughter of Oscar and Esther (Mahoney) Drinkwater. Eleanor attended Crosby High School and married her late husband, Daniel I. Small Sr., in December 1948. Eleanor was a woman of many talents. She was an accomplished seamstress and was commissioned by clients for many years. She had a “green thumb” when it came to her flower gardens and houseplants. She painted, drew in charcoal, basket weaved, quilted, re-upholstered furniture, hooked rugs and dabbled in a little model shipbuilding. Her greatest passion however was cooking. One would most often find her at the kitchen table reading cooking magazines or baking bread, cookies, canning or trying out new recipes, as well as recreating those recipes passed down. She was a strong and independent person right to the end, and will be missed dearly. Many treasured memories live on with her family and friends. She is survived by her son, Daniel I. Small Jr. and his wife, Sheryll, of Northport; three granddaughters, Meghan E. Small of Northport, Kathryn N. Small of Wolfeboro, N.H., and Laura A. Small of Northport; and one sister, Ruth Herrick of Northport. Family and friends are invited to call 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Memorial donations may be made to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 407, Belfast, ME 04915. Online condolences may be offered at www.ripostafh.com.
