SEARSPORT – David R. Gaul, 74, passed away Jan. 14, 2011, in Belfast, after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. He was born March 23, 1936, in Endicott, N.Y., son of C. Archie and Almeda Pratt Gaul. David was a retired vice president of Bangor Savings Bank. He served as manager of the Belfast branch for more than 30 years. He began his banking career with First National Bank, Belfast. After the merger of First National with Depositors Trust Co., he transferred to Rockland to manage a new office of Depositors Trust Co. He was a graduate of American Institute of Banking and Savings Bank Institute of New England. David was always very interested in antiques and enjoyed the business that he and his wife had owned and operated for more than 30 years. He was an active member of Maine Antique Dealers Association and had been an exhibitor in several of the association’s shows, as well as antique shows throughout New England. He was a past president of Eastern Maine Development Corp., a past president of Belfast Lions Club, a former director and treasurer of Waldo County General Hospital, and a former director and treasurer of Northport Golf Club. He also served as a director and officer of several other local organizations. He was a 43-year member of Belfast Lodge AF & AM, a member of Valley of Rockland Lodge, Valley of Portland Consistory and of Anah Shrine. David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis (Humphrey) Gaul; a daughter, Pamela Gaul Johnson and her husband, Michael T. Johnson, of Presque Isle; brothers, Archie J. Gaul and his wife, Judith, of Belfast, Michael Gaul and his wife, Nancy, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Alan Gaul and his wife, Carolyn, of Unity; as well as several nephews, nieces and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Bernard Gaul. Family and friends are invited to call 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
