AUGUSTA – William “Bill” D. Norton, 91, formerly of Pittsfield, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, in Augusta. He was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Fairfield, son of William and Inez (Dearbon) Norton. He attended Fairfield schools and moved to Pittsfield after World War II. He joined the U.S. Army, Company G, 103rd Regiment, 43rd Infantry Division, out of Waterville in 1941. He served in the Pacific on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, New Guinea and Luzon, Philippines, during World War II. While in the Pacific, he received two Purple Hearts. He was employed by Cianbro Corp. as a crane operator for 34 years and retired in 1984. After his retirement, he spent winters in Dunedin, Fla., where he enjoyed visiting Disney World and other amusement parks. In November 2005, he sold his home on Burnham Road, Pittsfield, and moved to Sunbury Village, Bangor. In November 2010, due to ill health, he moved into the veterans home in Augusta. He is survived by two nephews, Harold McPheters and his wife, Lori, of Corinth, Miss., and Robert Mercier and his wife, Donna, of Skowhegan; five nieces, Norma Ames and her husband, Robert, of York, Shirley Micklon of Raymond, MaryJane Cray and her husband, Kenneth, of Palmyra, Linda Marson and her husband, Brian, of Augusta and Susan Dunphy and her husband, Wallace, of Detroit and Bangor; several great and grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Norman and Raymond; and two sisters, Frances Mercier and Irene McPheters. At Uncle Billy’s request, there will be no public services. A private family burial will be held in the spring at Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield. Care for the family has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.
