Maine’s mental health system increasingly relies on the availability of community services that feature treatment delivered at patients’ homes and through local agencies as opposed to inpatient treatment at places like the Dorothea Dix center (formerly BMHI). Crucial to the success of the community model is the work of ACT teams — providers who monitor certain high-risk patients closely to ensure they take their meds, show up for appointments, pay their bills, etc. Funding for ACT teams has eroded in recent years, but with the proposed closing of the Dorothea Dix center, their presence is of growing importance.
