CASTINE – Bessie B. Mixer, 86, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Castine, to Leon and Ella Bakeman, and lived there all her life.

She attended Castine schools. Bessie loved living on the waterfront in Castine, tending her flower garden, and visiting on the wharf and on the corner with the local natives. Bessie will miss Castine and Castine will miss Bessie.

She was also an avid bingo player. She was employed as a welder at Bath Iron Works in the early days, as well as a waitress and store clerk. Later on she was employed as a clerk at the Castine post office, where she worked for 25 years.

Surviving members of her family include her daughter, Carol Longley of Berwick; grandsons, Gordon Longley Jr. and wife, Marnie, of Berwick and Sean Longley and wife, Pam, of North Berwick; great-grandchildren, Jacob Longley, Kayleigh Longley, Brittany Longley, Jordan Longley and Brittany Edgerly; great-great-grandchild, Ayden Rackliff; brother, Norwood Bakeman and his wife, Theresa, of Bucksport; and sisters, Julia Weaver of Thomaston, Lenora Brocklebank of Orland and Lena Bakeman of Castine. In addition to her parents, Bessie was predeceased by her husband, Carroll “Jute” Mixer, whom she was married to for 56 years. She was also predeceased by an infant grandson, Ryan Longley Frank; brothers, Earl Bakeman and Woodrow Bakeman; and sisters, Myra Brocklebank, Francis Sargent, Alice Bakeman and Lurena Black.

Funeral services will be announced in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
