SURRY, Maine — An electrical fire on Wednesday morning damaged the power lines to the Wes-Mac boat yard, but caused little other damage.
The initial call came in at about 9:30 a.m., according to Surry Fire Chief Jeff Grantham. When the first firefighters arrived on scene, they found that the main service line from the pole to the shop had shorted out and was burning.
“There was no way to do anything with the power on,” Grantham said.
The building was evacuated and because the power lines ran over the office portion of the business, Grantham advised workers to take any important papers with them as a precaution.
Once crews from Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. had cut power to the business, firefighters knocked down the fire and checked inside to make sure the fire had not spread into the interior of the building. There was no fire inside, and all of the damage was limited to the exterior electrical connections.
No one was injured in the fire.
Because of the nature of the business and the weather conditions, Grantham called for mutual aid assistance. Firefighters from Blue Hill and Ellsworth assisted at the scene while crews from Sedgwick and Orland were put on standby. Grantham said he appreciated the response from the neighboring towns and noted that the mu-tual aid agreements among the towns in the region has been a big help for all the departments involved.
