NORTH BELGRADE and WINTHROP – Frances L. Barrett, 87, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Maine General Medical Center Thayer Unit, Waterville. She was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Oakland, a daughter of the late Ormand Sr. and Florence (White) Stevens.

Fran attended schools in Belgrade and graduated from Belgrade High School in 1941. She had perfect attendance during her four years of high school. Frances trained at Sisters Hospital, Waterville, and became a registered nurse in February 1948. She attended Tufts and Harvard Medical Center, Boston. She retired from Boston City Hospital after 18 years, then nursed at Togus Veteran’s Hospital for another 18 years. Frances married retired Army colonel, James H. Barrett, June 5, 1976, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Oakland. Fran and Jimmy resided many years between Winthrop and Florida.

She is survived by sisters, Annie Knight of North Belgrade, Rosa S. Shaw and husband, Glenwood, of Augusta, and Retha Libby of North Belgrade; stepdaughter-in-law, Betty Barrett of Rhode Island; grandson, Scott Barrett and wife, Casey, of New York; numerous nieces and nephews, who adored her; many cousins; and three sisters-in-law, Mildred Stevens of Ohio, Annette Stevens of Waterville and Alberta Stevens of North Belgrade. She was predeceased by her husband, James; parents; brothers, Ormand Jr., Leonard, Edward and Kenneth; sisters, Katherine and Margaret; and a wonderful stepson, James Barrett. Many thanks to her sisters, Retha, Rosa and Annie; and nephew, Bruce Shaw, for their special care during her last weeks.

Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville, where a funeral service will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, with Father Paul Murray, celebrant. Committal will take place at a later date in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade.
