READFIELD, Maine — Investigators say an autopsy is under way on a body that was found in the rubble of a house destroyed by fire in the central Maine town of Readfield.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says investigators hope the autopsy will determine the identity of the victim and cause of death. The body was found Wednesday morning.

McCausland said two of the five people who lived in the house have been accounted for. Investigators are seeking information on the whereabouts of the other occupants.

McCausland declined comment on a Kennebec Journal story that said police are searching for two people from Massachusetts who rented the home. According to the newspaper, the pair’s car was not in the driveway when firefighters arrived at the home at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
