GRAND LAKE STREAM – Louise Savage Moore, 93, passed away Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, surrounded by members of her family and with her cat, Sybil, by her side, at her home. She was born Jan. 11, 1918, at the Greens Farm, Coplin Plantation, to Albion and Louise Danico Savage. She was the youngest of 10 brothers and sisters.
Louise received her normal school education at Farmington State Teachers College. She moved to Grand Lake Stream to teach school and married Lawrence William Moore in 1941, in Grand Lake Stream. Louise taught school in Grand Lake Stream until the school closed and in Baileyville until her retirement in 1978. Throughout the course of her career she completed her education receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine, Orono. She will be fondly remembered by generations of students. Louise lived by herself maintaining her own home until her death and remained active her entire life. She was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing books. She was a celebrated quilter. Each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren has an heirloom she created. She took great pride in creating and donating a quilt every year to benefit Grand Lake Stream Folk Art Festival. Louise attended Union Congregational Church, Grand Lake Stream, and was a member of the Eastern Star and several organizations dedicated to the welfare of animals. Louise loved spring and the blooming of the rhodora renewed her spirit each year.
Louise is survived by her three children, Peter and his wife, Paula, who reside in Bremerton, Wash., Perry and his wife, Jean, who reside in Hingham, Mass., and Cathy Shamel and her husband, Bill, who reside in Grand Lake Stream; and a nephew, Newton Stevens who resides in New Hampshire. Louise cherished her six grandchildren, Jonathan, Tawny, Karen, Katrina, Teresa and Kevin; and seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Alexei, Madeline, Lucy, Nell, Mia and Jane. Some of her closest friends include Dorothy Johnson, Edith Sprague, Bea Bagley, and Jill and Ed McGrath. All were a treasured source of companionship and support.
