BREWER – Elva L. Abbott, 89, died Feb. 20, 2011, at a local nursing home. She was born July 9, 1921, in South Wales, England, daughter of Frederick and Lily (Pierce) Meek.

Elva married Clayton Abbott in England and she was one of the first war brides to come to America on the Queen Mary.

She worked at Bangor Box Co. and at St. Joseph Hospital for 35 years. Elva was a member of First United Methodist Church, Brewer, and she loved to donate to charities for children. Elva’s greatest love was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she enjoyed shopping.

Elva is survived by a son, Robert Abbott and his wife, Micheline, of Brewer; a daughter, Lynn Robertson and her special friend, Mark, of Orrington; three grandchildren, Shawn Abbott, Danielle Robertson and her friend, Patrick, and Scott Robertson and his friend, Alyson; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Gilbert and Erin Gilbert; two sisters, Glenis Walton and her husband, Eric, of England, and Edna LeBree of Arizona; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Clayton Abbott; five brothers, Gilbert, Horace, Bernard, Wilfred and Albert; two sisters, Olive and Iris; and a niece, Marcel Roberts. The family thanks Brewer Rehabilitation and Living Center for their care and kindness of Mom; and to her hairdresser, Deb Smith, for lifting Mom’s spirits by helping her look beautiful.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at First United Methodist Church, 40 S. Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Dr. George Curtis III officiating. Relatives and friends may call 1 p.m. until time of the service at the church. Those who wish to remember Elva is a special way may make gifts in her memory to a charity of their choice.
