CORINNA – Hilma S. Knowles, 90, died Feb. 21, 2011, surrounded by her children at a Bangor health care facility. She was born May 11, 1920, in Corinna, a daughter of Donald and Ethelyn (Skinner) Smith.

She was a graduate of Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1939. Hilma was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a homemaker and childcare provider for many years, and later had been employed at Eastland Woolen Mill. Hilma was a member of Happy Hour Club and the area hospital chaplaincy. She was an active member of Pleasant Street Christian Church where she served for many years as the assistant treasurer, as well as taught Sunday school, Bible school and participated in youth groups. She enjoyed playing miniature golf and outings with her friends.

She is survived by three sons, Dennis and wife, Penny Knowles, of Sanford, Ralph and wife, Kathie Knowles, of Palmyra, and Larry Knowles of Plano, Texas; a daughter, Elaine and husband, Donald Knowles, of Bangor; a brother, Donald “Malcolm” and wife, Barbara Smith, of Gorham; nine grandchildren, Denise and husband, Norman Butler, Stephen and wife, Amy Knowles, Kristie and husband, David Jandreau, Craig Knowles, Marla and husband, Steven Scott, Brett Knowles, Valerie Knowles, Todd and wife, Virginia Berry, and Jaime and husband, Richard Stevens; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 47 years, Thurlow Knowles, in 1987; two brothers, Dean and Glenn Smith; and two sisters, Athalie and Gwendolyn.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, with the Rev. Edward Jaworski officiating. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of services at the chapel. Spring burial will be at Morse’s Corner Cemetery, Corinna.
