ENFIELD – Althea Applebee Lowell passed Feb. 23, 2011.
Althea lived by the creed, “others first.” Growing up in Enfield, she learned hunting, fishing and camping from her father, and maintained an outdoor perspective throughout her life. Higher education led her to Lee Academy and the introduction to “EA.” They started married life on Cold Stream Pond in June 1952, and she then followed Ernie to exotic locations, in Lee serving as a housemother at Mallett Hall, in Fort Kent as mother of two, and in East Millinocket as bookkeeper at Great Northern before they settled in the metropolis of Lincoln. As if mothering her two children was not enough, she continued to put others first as she served as a “bowling assistant” at Lakeside Lanes, Webelos Den mother and first-rate bookkeeper at LP&P. She re-energized in escapes to Mack Hill, where she enjoyed the solitude with her crossword puzzles, blue jays, chickadees and other two-legged human creatures and friends that happened by for her generous meals. After retirement she returned to Cold Stream to become a grammie, and once again enjoy the loon calls echoing across the shoreline. A host of four-legged, furry creatures contributed to the mayhem throughout the years.
Althea was predeceased by her mother and father, Bernice (Snowman) and Vinal Applebee; and her husband, Ernie. She is survived by son, Tom Lowell and wife, Sandy, of Cincinnati; daughter, Lynn Mayer and husband, Paul, of Enfield; granddaughter, Karen Arrabal and husband, Peter, of Bethesda, Md.; great-granddaughter, Mary Arrabal; brother, Vinal Applebee of Enfield; and sisters, Muriel diBonaventura of Newton, Mass., and Marvel Bacha of Farmington.
