ORONO and BANGOR – Frederick Albert Brown Jr., 86, husband of the late Hazel A. Brown, died Feb. 24, 2011, surrounded by his son, David and daughter-in-law, Suzanne, at his son’s home. He was born May 8, 1924, in Bangor, son of Frederick A. Brown Sr. and Gertrude (Frost) Brown.

Fred was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. after 36 years of service. He was an avid sports fan, particularly enjoying golf, baseball and cross-country skiing. He also enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Fred attended First United Methodist Church, Bangor, for many years. He was a member of Telephone Pioneers; Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10 AF & AM, Bangor; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley, Bangor; and Maine Consistory 32 degree.

Surviving are one son, David Brown and his wife, Suzanne Ritchie-Brown, of Orono; two grandchildren, Cassidy Taylor Brown and Cameron Edward Brown; and one niece. In addition to his parents and his wife, Hazel, he was predeceased by one brother, Ralph F. Brown; and a sister, Winifred L. Wood.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Randall C. Chretien, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Bangor, officiating. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
