OLD TOWN – James Terrence Nahra, 65, died unexpectedly March 3, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. Jim was born Feb. 25, 1946, in Tampa, Fla.
He graduated from Old Town High School, Ricker Classical Institute and the University of Maine, Orono, with a Bachelor of Science in education. In 1970 he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy MacKenzie, and started teaching English at John Bapst Memorial High School. He retired in 2008 after 37 years in education and more than 20 years as the chairman of the English department. While at Bapst, Jim coached varsity baseball, junior varsity girls and boys basketball, girls and boys tennis and the golf team. He umpired American Legion and high school baseball. He loved being a father to his daughter, Bethany Nahra Sproul, and being a grandfather to his “perfect” grandson, Ethan Andrew Sproul.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Bethany and son-in-law, Andrew Sproul, and grandson, Ethan. He leaves behind Jeremy Smith, who was like a son to him; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Eleanor and Ken Parent and Ann and Ralph LaPlante; brother-in-law, Ken MacKenzie; many nieces and nephews whom he was very proud of: Julie Stinson, Steven Parent, Terri St. Louis, Karen Clukey, Brenda Gardner, Kristi Kochis, Margo Lonko, Claudia MacKenzie, Robert MacKenzie and Keith MacKenzie; several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by aunts, Evelyn Hazel and Helen Nahra; his uncle, John Nahra; and mother-and father-in-law, Bernard and Jeanette MacKenzie.
