VAN BUREN and FORT KENT – Florina Dufour Spencer, 95, died March 27, 2011, at a Van Buren health care facility after a long and active life. She was born Dec. 26, 1915, in Fort Kent, the daughter of Thomas and Meddie (Bouthot) Dufour.

She grew up in Madawaska and attended elementary and high schools there. She then went to Fort Kent Normal School, now the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where she majored in teacher training and graduated from their two-year program. She taught in the Madawaska school system for 12 years. During World War II she worked for the U.S. Rationing Board, Presque Isle. After the war she moved to Everett, Mass., and Wakefield, Mass., and worked for Boden Ice Cream Plant, Everett, Mass. She was active in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and was a past president of Emblem Club in the Everett, Mass., area.

Surviving her are a sister, Bernice Magown of San Diego; a brother, Raynald Dufour and his wife, Betty, of Brigham City, Utah; a special nephew, Thomas Cox and his wife, Sandra, of Caribou; and a friend and Eucharistic minister, Susan Henshaw of Wakefield, Mass. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Edward Spencer; brothers, Lucien, Zenon and Maurice Dufour; and sisters, Lorraine (Dufour) Cox, Aurellia, Florence and Marianne Dufour.

Family and friends may call 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Thursday at Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Spring burial will be held May 17 at the parish cemetery.
