DOVER-FOXCROFT – Harold R. Mountain, 84, passed away March 24, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. Harold was born Jan. 24, 1927, in Dexter, the son of Angus J. and Freda (Clukey) Mountain.

He attended high school in Dexter, and then went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his return, Harold attended Lowell Textile Institute, Lowell, Mass. When Harold returned to Maine the four founders of Barco Federal Credit Union chose Harold to start up and run B.A.R.C.O. for the first six years. Harold later went on to become manager of purchasing and stores for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad; he was a true railroader through and through. Even after retirement he kept up with many aspects of the railroad industry. He was part of what was lovingly remembered as “the over the hill gang,” which consisted of B & A retirees. He will be remembered forever for his quick wit, always telling it like it was – you knew you were truly loved if Harold was razzing you. He had a fond love of crossword puzzles and would be hard pressed to find one he could not tackle with ease.

Harold was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife of 51 years, Janis (Houston) Mountain; and their son, Angus Mountain. Harold is survived by his sister, Eunice Gordon and husband, Tad, of Florida; a son, James Mountain and wife, Becky, of Bangor; a daughter, Tammy (Mountain) Moore of Dover-Foxcroft; four grandchildren, John Moore Jr. and wife, Billie Jo (Hardy) Moore, of Dover-Foxcroft, Jeremy Mountain, Brandon Mountain and Gina Mountain, all of Bangor; two great-grandchildren, Sylvia Wade of Bangor and Dylan Moore of Dover-Foxcroft; many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family extends a special thank-you to Ned Neville Jr., Heather Houston and Jeanne Paradis for the time they spent with Harold in the last weeks of his life.

Burial will be later in the spring in the family lot at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at
