PASSADUMKEAG – Lloyd Rigby, 92, died peacefully March 29, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Mount Chase, the son of Harry E. and Gladys (Ross) Rigby.
Lloyd met and married Jennie Putnam while working in New Hampshire in August 1941. They moved to Mount Chase, where Lloyd spent many years as a forestry warden, watching for fires from a tower in Mount Chase. He was a patrolman who spent many long days and nights putting out forest fires in and around Haye Lake – Baxter State Park, then later was a warden in Macwahoc. In 1955, Lloyd accepted a job at the Reforestation Nursery, Greenbush, where he retired in 1976. They spent many years as active members of the community and joined Faith Bible Church and later Passadumkeag Baptist Church. Lloyd was a selectman for many years and became a certified plumbing inspector for many area towns. He was elected moderator at town meetings. Lloyd loved to greet people while selling tickets at Grange suppers or helping with a fundraiser yard sale. He was most proud of his “wood pile” which would grow and then disappear as he processed many cords of firewood. Lloyd spent many hours helping his girls and their families. He was a much-loved and patient Grampa. He enjoyed teaching gun safety, trapping, hunting and how to pile wood so it wouldn’t tip over to his grandchildren, Ken, Lynn, Tim, Faith, April, Pam, Lori and Donny. He welcomed each of his 11 great-grandchildren, loving and guiding them with wisdom gained from experience.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Jennie (Putnam) Rigby; daughters, Corrine A. Bridge and husband, Burrill, of Hermon, Christine Cote and husband, Ronald F. Jr., of Blue Hill and Jeanne Kerns and husband, Gary, of Topsham; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother and four sisters. The family thanks Beacon Hospice and Lloyd’s many caregivers at Westgate Manor for their care and compassion these last few weeks.
A gathering of remembrance will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Gifts in his memory may be made to Westgate Manor, Activities Fund, 750 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at
