BOSTON — The Maine Black Bears received strong pitching efforts from Ashley Kelley and Beth Spoehr to sweep the Boston University Terriers 8-2 and 6-1 in softball action Sunday.
BU edged Maine on Saturday 3-2.
In Saturday’s game, BU grabbed an early lead with two runs in the first inning en route to the win.
Meghan McLain hit two singles to lead Maine while Cassie Hodgson chipped in with an RBI.
In Sunday’s first game, Kelley scattered seven hits and allowed two runs to record the win. Kristin Allen doubled, singled and knocked in three runs for the Black Bears. Margaret Hilton and Hodgson each had two singles and an RBI while Terren Hall added two singles.
In Sunday’s second game, Beth Spoehr picked up the victory for the Black Bears, giving up just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. McLain homered and singled to knock in three runs. Jennifer Eberhardt hit a two run double while Kali Burnham added two singles.

Tufts sweeps Bates

At Medford, Mass. Saturday, Tufts University overcame a four-run deficit with two, four-run innings to take their NESCAC East opening game Saturday afternoon, and then swept a Sunday doubleheader 9-3 and 8-0 at Spicer Field.
On Saturday, Sarah Hedtler’s bases-loaded double in the third inning scored two runs to highlight the first four-run rally and tie the game 5-5. The Jumbos took their first lead in the fifth with four more, two coming on a single by Chrissie Massrey.
Lizzy Iuppa had a double, a single and an RBI for the Jumbos. Jo Clair and Lena Cantone each had two singles and an RBI.
Karen Ullmann led Bates of Lewiston with a double, two singles and an RBI. AnnaMarie Martino had three singles and Kristen Finn contributed with two singles and an RBI.
On Sunday, Clair went 5-for-6 with two home runs, a double, two singles, and seven RBIs to power the Jumbos. Emily Beinecke had a home run, two singles, and two RBIs in the first game while Cantone had three singles in the second game.
For the Bobcats, Leah Maciejewski had a double, three singles, and one RBI in the two games. Martino hit two singles in the second game.

Saint Joseph’s, St. Joseph split

At West Hartford, Conn., Saint Joseph’s College of Standish scored in the top of the seventh inning to take the first game 2-1, but saw St. Joseph College come back in the second to win by the same score and split the Great Northeast Athletic Conference twinbill on Sunday.
In the first game, Danyelle Shufelt scored the first run after leading off with a bunt single and scoring on a double by Jill Howard in the first inning. In the seventh, Lindsay Moore led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on Katelyn Call’s double to left. Maddie Kluna (5-2) allowed eight hits and had five strikeouts to earn the complete-game win.
In the second game, the visiting Monks drew first blood again, but St. Joseph won the game in its last at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. Using the tiebreaker rule, a runner (April Campanella) started off at second base. She went to third on a sacrifice and then scored on Sarah Cousens’ sacrifice fly.

USM sweeps W. Connecticut

At Danbury, Conn., Brett Barrett’s two-run single in the ninth inning lifted the Huskies to victory in the opener, then Nick Douglass pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball as the University of Southern Maine swept Western Connecticut 10-9 and 4-1 Sunday in Little East Conference play.
In Game 1, USM of Gorham scored five runs in the last two innings to earn the victory. Tucker White doubled in the decisive ninth.
Anthony Pisani rapped a home run and three singles with five RBIs to lead the Huskies. Josh Mackey doubled twice and singled and Forrest Chadwick doubled and singled.
David Simone doubled twice with three RBIs for the Colonials.
In Game 2, Douglass scattered four hits, struck out eight and walked five to earn the win. Mackey had an RBI singles in the first and third innings and singled and scored in the sixth.
Zach Dandrea doubled and singled for WCSU.

Trinity sweeps Colby

At Hartford, Conn., Trinity College piled up 47 runs in three games while sweeping a New England Small College Athletic Conference series from Colby College of Waterville.
The Bantams won Saturday’s game 10-8, then took Sunday’s contests 13-2 and 15-6.
On Saturday, Luke Auger posted two doubles, a single and five RBIs to lead Trinity’s 18-hit attack.
Mike Mastrocola led Colby with two singles, a double and an RBI. Richard Newton hit a solo home run and a single while Devlin McConnell added two doubles and two runs scored.
In Sunday’s opener, the Bantams’ three-run first inning was enough to beat the Mules. Stephen Rogers led the winners with two doubles, a single and four RBIs.
Colin Cummings belted a two-run home run to propel Colby.
In Sunday’s second game, Kevin Mortimer had three hits and two RBIs to spark Trinity. Richard Newton posted three singles to lead Colby, while Mike Mastrocola and Alec Finigan each doubled and singled.

Tufts sweeps Bates

At Medford, Mass., Bates College dropped all three of its weekend games with NESCAC East opponent Tufts University.
The Bobcats lost to Tufts on Saturday 5-0. On Sunday, the Jumbos won the first game 7-6 and took the nightcap 3-2.
In Saturday’s game, Kevin Gilchrist pitched nine scoreless innings for Tufts University.
Pat Murphy hit three singles to lead the Bobcats. Chris Burke and Jake Simon chipped in with two singles apiece.
In Sunday’s first game, the Jumbos rallied to score two runs in the sixth inning to earn the victory.
Gordy Webb hit a two-run home run to lead Bates. Burke hit a two-run double while Murphy added a two-run single.
In Sunday’s second game, Tufts notched the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on an RBI single.
Burke hit an RBI double in the first inning for the Bobcats. Ryan Sonberg chipped in with two singles.

Amherst sweeps Bowdoin

At Amherst, Mass., on Sunday, the Lord Jeffs wiped out a five-run deficit to win the opener, then outpitched the Polar Bears in the second game while sweeping a Sunday doubleheader by scores of 14-7 and 8-1, respectively.
In the opener, Amherst scored four runs in the sixth inning and six in the seventh to pull away. Brian Merrigan rapped a double and two singles with two RBIs to lead the hosts.
Joe Comizio knocked in two runs with three singles for Bowdoin College of Brunswick. Dan Finley homered and singled with three RBIs.
In the nightcap, Fred Shepard shut out the Polar Bears on one hit through five innings. Scott Shaffer, Taiki Kasuga and Bob Cook all doubled and singled.
Comizio doubled for the Polar Bears.
